Essay Improvements

12:29

During the Christmas holidays, we were set an essay with the title 'Media production is dominated by global institutions, which sell their products and services to national audiences'. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

I need to include in future essays:

  • Marketing
  • Niche market
  • Internal/ external
  • Conglomerate
  • Cross-media convergence
  • Vertical and horizontal integration
  • Synergy
  • Distribution
  • Local cinemas
  • Cross promotion
  • Exchange: subscription (eg. Netflix)/one-off purchase/digital
  • Platforms
  • British audiences

I mentioned a lot of information on the US and its audiences, but in the future I need to include more on the UK/ British audiences:
  • As well as mentioning ABC and ESPN marketing of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' in the US, mention in the UK Disney ownership of 'Disney Channel', 'Disney XD' and 'Disney Junior' (each of these channels has a +1) on which the film trailer was shown during every advert break during the weeks leading up to the release; each week, Disney Channel reaches on average 1,456 homes
  • 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' has smashed the record for the biggest box office debut weekend globally, with ticket sales of £355 million
  • 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' made £83.4 million in UK cinemas in the first fortnight after release
  • 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' has become the fastest film ever to pass the £80 million mark at UK cinemas, just 13 days-the previous record-holder 'Skyfall' took 23 days
  • Synergy: Burger King
  • Disney not only shows on Big Screen, but also phones and TV
  • Birmingham Fashion Show-appealing to fashionable stereotypes
  • The figures on 31st December 2015: UK box office - the all-time top nine
1 Skyfall (2012)- £102.9m

2 Avatar (2009) – £94m

3 Spectre (2015) – £92m

4 Star Wars (2015) – The Force Awakens – £83.5m

5 Titanic (1997) – £80.1m

6 Toy Story 3 (2010) – £74m

7 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) – £73.1m

8 Mamma Mia (2008) – £68.5m

9 Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) – £66.1m
